Zechariah was a priest, the father of John the Baptist and he is actually the first person mentioned in connection with the Christmas story in Luke’s Gospel. Zechariah and his wife were both righteous, God-honoring people who had no children and were well past child bearing years. As we read the account we learn that Zachariah became mute due to disbelief that God would have his wife bear a child in her old age. But after his child was born and Zechariah indicated his name to be John his speech was restored and he began to praise God.
